Training interruptions due to injury or illness can have vastly different consequences depending on the athlete’s level of adaptation. For less-developed athletes, short periods away from training are easily recovered. For elite athletes operating near their performance ceiling, even brief breaks can result in rapid and significant losses—particularly in power and aerobic capacity. Understanding detraining, how quickly it can occur, and how targeted retraining strategies can minimise performance loss is critical for maintaining long-term athletic performance and reducing the impact of time away from training.
